Edwards Bespoke Shoe making service

September 8th, 2009

madetomeasurepng

Did you know that we offer bespoke shoe making services?

Edwards customers can choose from one of the following options:

Full bespoke shoe making service with Tony Gaziano of Gaziano & Girling

We will arrange for Tony Gaziano of Gaziano & Girling to meet with you for the initial consultation when he will measure your feet and discuss your requirements, he will then arrange further fittings with you directly.  Tony makes and waxes his own thread and stitches his bespoke shoes totally by hand for a unique refined finish and a very close welt for greater longevity.

Retail price: This service is the ultimate in made to measure shoes and the price would be agreed on appointment (usually starting at around £2,000 per pair).

Grenson’s bespoke service

One of Edwards experienced staff members will measure your feet and do the preliminary drawings in store. Your measurements will then be sent to Grenson from which their craftsmen will create symmetrical wooden lasts using the largest measurements provided. From this they will then file and carve each last by hand to the exact measurements provided by Edwards to match your feet exactly.

From these lasts an unfinished pair of shoes will be made and sent to Edwards for a first fitting. If you are happy with the fit the shoes are sent back to Grenson’s for completion, if not then you can specify how the shoe needs to be changed – maybe you prefer a closer fit or the shoe needs to be made broader - and this process can be repeated until we achieve the perfect fit.

The shape of your feet will change over time and the lasts that Grenson’s have created can be changed to reflect this so for any future pairs of shoes you order or for any tweaking/repairs they will use the latest version of your lasts.

Retail price: Price on appointment but usually starting at £1850 for the first pair, £850 for subsequent pairs using the last already created.

Tweaking & repairs in store for all purchases:
We want to ensure any shoes you purchase from us fit you perfectly and can do some minor tweaking here in store – for example we can stretch a shoe for extra comfort. We can also carry out minor repairs (hand stitching), polishing, cleaning and stain removal in store.

For more information please email us at info@edwardsofmanchester.co.uk or call into see us in our Deansgate store in Manchester, we’d love to see you!

60 second interview with Steve Fitzsimmons, owner of Edwards of Manchester

June 30th, 2009

Steve Fitzsimmons became the proud owner of Edwards of Manchester in May 2008. We asked him to tell us more about himself and his plans for the business:

SF: I’m originally from the Lake District and have been in the retail business for 23 years - mainly men’s and women’s clothing , including fashion labels G-star, Diesel, Firetrap and also some footwear brands like Jeffrey West, Nicholas Deakins and Patrick Cox. So I have been involved in footwear to a certain extent but not like I am now with Edwards!

I was also an agent and distributor for an Italian clothing company and an agent for a Brazilian shoe company which is how I was introduced to the previous owner of Edwards of Manchester and bought the business from him when it came up for sale.

What excited you about Edwards of Manchester?
SF: The quality and the market they were in - at the top end supplying good quality footwear….. 80% of it being British.

Where do you want to take the business?
SF: Edwards of Manchester is the second oldest shoe shop in the world (established in 1830) and used to make their own shoes. We are going back into designing and making our own shoes again through our Edwards 1830 range and currently use other factories to manufacture them. Our long term goal is to have shoe makers back onsite in our sub-basement, like it used to be in the 1830s.

Any other exciting developments to share with us?
SF: The recent refurbishment of our ladies department is looking great and now compliments our upmarket men’s department; we’re continuing to develop our own Edwards 1830 range and looking at bringing even more contemporary British brands into the store.

We also have a number of other plans in the pipeline that we can’t talk about yet!

On that cliff-hanger we’ll leave Steve to get back to work! Thanks Steve!

Width of a Bass Larson Penny Loafer

March 9th, 2009

When I buy a pair of Church’s shoes, I require a “G” Fitting / size 12. How does this width compare to the width of a Bass Larson Penny Loafer, please?

Edwards reply
Goodyear welted shoes, as Church shoes are, will be firmer on the width than the moccasin constructed loafers, like the Bass Larson.

I would think the “EE” fitting would be alright although if wishing to purchase the equivalent size in the Bass, size 12.5 may be more suitable as the Bass are US sizes.

Delivery to Germany

March 9th, 2009
Do you also sell shoes to germany ? How much would the delivery be?

Edwards reply
Yes we have sold quite a few pairs to our customers in Germany. The delivery is £20.00.

Heavy-duty winter shoe - General advice

March 9th, 2009

I’m looking for a brown, heavy-duty winter shoe that is reasonably smart, reasonably water and mud-resistent. I was thinking of the Leonardo G military boot, but it’s a bit too clumphy. Do you have any suggestions, please.

Edwards reply
The shoes below all have rubber soles and are reasonably weather resistant and are not as “clumphy” as the Leonardo.

Church Lancaster Dainite Rubber sole
Paraboot Nil Rubber sole
R M Williams Comfort Craftsman Rubber sole
Crockett & Jones Grasmere Dainite sole
Crockett & Jones Tetbury Chukka Boot Dainite sole

All of the above have been used by various customers as “Board room-Building Site” shoes. All of the above are in stock in brown with the last three styles being available in black also.
